Shotton Hall Theatre School

I am employed in a local theatre school as a theatre lighting technician where I have the responsibly of rigging and operating the lights for their Drama and Musical performances. In order for the productions to be successful I needed to attend regular meetings, meet deadlines, work as part of a production team, and design and operate the lighting console. In addition, as part of a small team I am also involved in running all sound and creative aesthetics of the performances. I do find the role stressful at times but I enjoy the challenge and the feeling I get at the end of the productions of a job well done.

At work we have just done and are doing  two Connections productions Heritage & Remote. For these productions I was the LD and SD with these productions we went to other theatres to preform this so when we go to other theatres I needed to get set up as soon as possible and program lighting and sound then be ready to run all tec of the show. For the production Remote is still in its first stagers of rehearsals but will be ran in the same way as befor.

Home Coming - Periplum (Devised Theatre)

I worked with Periplum in November of 2014, On the performance Home Coming for this production I was helping out with the LD of the production, helping make desisons on where lights should be and what gels should go into the lantons, This was a outdoor performance dither was problems that were needed to be over come with sound and lighting, This was a grate production for me to work on because of having the preacher if a real director and Lighting Designer. This production has givin me the insight into what it would be like to work for a theatre company and has only made me want to go in to this a prfeshon even more as before.

Cinderella / Aladdin (Pantomime)

  • Cinderella was the first pantomime I was part of in college in this production I was the LD for this production we where better equipped to deal with demand from the director we under stud hanging fixtures better and faster and using the lighting console and sound console better a it was nice to be able to explore different colours and the happy side lighting.

  • In Aladdin i was the Stage Manager (SM) this production was in my second year of college I found this to be a good experience on changing my role in a production for this I was in charge of looking after all pops and calling cast to stage and calling the show in the running order of the she and to propped if need be.

Night at the asylum. (Devised & Variety)

Night at the asylum was the first show I under tuck the role of the LD at college, This show was really just to get used to using the college lighting and the console and the lighting fixtures, it was also the first time I was asked to have the right show documents things like show reports and the proper rehearsal notes documents.

In the start of Night at the asylum when the performing arts students started to devising the show they where giving us the production team lighting ideas and the we sat and came up with the lighting designs for the production. After watching the first three rehearsals and then changing some of the designs me and the rest of the production team set out on the on putting the designs in to action, once the rising had finished i then started programming the lighting console because this show was made up of lodes of different acts I was able to bring each act in at a time and go thaw the lighting with that act and see if it was right for that act. It was nice do it this way because with this being my first production on the colleges lighting console.

Little Shop of Horrors College production (Musical theatre)

For my colleges production of Little Shop of Hororros, I was the Lighting Designer for this production we had a full set so in my designs I needed to think about the set and how to light the set in the right way to not have dark patches on the set. The day the set arrived at my college was one week before the production was to start and open to its audience so once the set was in the theatre and assembled I needed to get out the leaders and reabgle lighting to cover the set evnley and add lights because the set was bigger than what I expected it to be, so I needed to change my lighting plans to fit what we had. With the production being about a man eating plant I wanted to keep the gels plant like colours so greens, reds, blues, purple and beige. In scene where the plant would do something big and the colour of the stage would change I would keet the focus punt on the plant be keeping it in a different colour.

Other school production i have been involved in. (Musical theatre & Drama)

  • We will rock you
  • Hairspray
  • Two
  • Joseph and the amazing technicolor dreamcoat
  • Footloose
  • The Wiz
  • Our day out
  • Little shop of Horrors
  • Habeas Corpus
  • Grease
In most of these productions i tuck on the role of the mine LD apart from We will Rock you and Hairspray I used the first two shows as a guide to help me under stand the way lighting design worked.

Hairspray (Musical Theatre)

  • In the making of Hairspray I was involved in not just the lighting of the show I was also involved on some prop making, The prop that we made was a giant Ultra Clutch hairspray can, we made this can to open for Tracy Turnblad to walk out of on the song "You can't stop the beat". Also in the lighting design of this show i go a little more involved in what the lighting designe with things like the colour on the lighting where the fixtures will be hung on the rigs and then sat down at the lighting console and started programming the desk.
